A friend of mine gave me an HP zd7000 laptop she'd dropped. Long story short, it wasn't booting (into Windows). Running it from a Parsix Boss live CD enabled us to mount and see the Windows partition. She was somewhat impressed.
I left a copy of the Boss test 1 CD with her. Her reaction: "That's OK, I'm not a hobbyist."
But she is a hobbyist -- just not of the "operating system" variety. She has her new laptop hooked up via MIDI to her electronic piano and runs a variety of digital music apps.
We need to somehow get to the point where Linux is no longer seen as a "hobbyist" OS, but as another platform for getting things done.
(Meanwhile, Parsix Boss dual-boots and runs very nicely in 1440x900 on that laptop.) |

Have patience.
Windows is quickly becoming the platform for NOT getting things done.
Unless fighting viruses is all you want to do.
The problem with Linux is, everyone wants to contribute to the kernel and create
distributions, nobody wants to write applications, like the music apps your friend
needs. Until that changes - there's nothing Linux can do for her, except salvage her files next time Windows crashes. |
