Okay, this is the error received when attempting to open nautilus as root:
GConf error: Failed to contact configuration server; some possible causes are that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you have stale NFS locks due to a system crash. See http://www.gnome.org/projects/gconf/ for information. (Details - 1: Failed to get connection to session: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.) All further errors shown only in the terminal.
A second error also shows up simultaneously...it says:
An error occurred while loading or saving configuration information for Nautilus. Some of your configuration settings may not work properly.
Nautilus then opens, but in spatial view. The second error will continue to appear whenever any action is taken in the spatial window. |

After pressing "Shut Down..." in System menu. a window with three buttons will appear but pressing "Shut Down" from the window doesn't work.
Another thing is Update Manager. I can't open it via its tray icon. after opening it from System menu and pressing "system update", it just refresh the update manager again.
Synaptic too. I don't wanna update OpenOffice.org and VLC. If I mark all updates then try to unmark openoffice, it will unmark whole packages except openoffice! |

Is anyone else still receiving the error:
"Could not display "computer:///"
Nautilus cannot handle "computer" locations
I get a similar error for SMB:///
I've noticed a lot of Gnome updates over the past few weeks but this error persists. Any ideas? |

| no problems with nautilus on my 64bit setup but I've now lost the shutdown restart buttons in system only log out is there. compiz is also strange as the updated setup cssm settings do not work at all. panel applets are now working again gnome power manager also has a problem still has dependency problems F-Spot cannot find the Dbus session bus. |

| Pssst, mandog. Grab Ibex's fast-user-switch-applet Deb and install it in Parsix. It should fix your missing shutdown menu items problem and integrate with Pidgin as a side bonus. |

mandog, you mean your nautilus works with computer:/// trash:/// network:/// etc?
New compiz-fusion packages are available and work perfectly for me. Also I ported that gnome-control-center patch for desktop effects there.
Going to test that fast-user-switch applet. |

I meant it works not perfect still has the faults you list. Ive had the compiz updates, compiz only works on the default settings cssm is unable to change from the defaults. |

I have a suggestion Alan. What about using Pckagekit beside Syanptic while it has a simpler and more user-friendly interface for beginners.

I think I have a problem with config-editer, when I originally set up Boss a couple of months ago I made compiz the default window manager now i can't alter it in config-editer. so it auto starts regardless even removing config-editer + its settings make no difference. I also have no sound from any application.
Edit I've got cssm to change some settings but this is strange using the fusion icon no changes can be made in the setings manager just the compiz default settings if i disable the icon completely and open desktop effects from preferences then I can make changes but i still can't turn off compiz but that is not that important at the moment |

compiz window manager settings is located in /desktop/gnome/applications/window_manager/ set default and current. To disable compiz, set default to /usr/bin/metacity
Sound in what kind of applications? Would you please let me know? This GNOME 2.24 is a real mess! They made many radical changes thats breaks things. You know, GNOME 2.24's sound back-end is not ESD anymore. |

I have no sound at all from any application, only the test sounds. yes I think you are right about Gnome being a mess and so are many other things at the moment. as we will find out in the coming months. |
