i'm not sure whats happened, but i can't run synaptic anymore, either as user or as root.
i can use apt-get, but not synaptic
if i try to run it i get this error:
E: ERROR: could not create configuration directory /home/root/.synaptic - mkdir (2 No such file or directory) |

| Based on this error and the other one you posted in my VirtualBox thread I'd say you have some permissions problems on your system. Both of these errors involve the inability to create files. The root user should have full read write access to your entire system. If this has changed, then you have some serious problems. A reinstall might be in your future. |

a reinstall was in my future after the virtualbox problem.... and i got a blue screen crash (just like windows!!) after updating intel driver as suggested by alan due to resolution problems...
anyway...
this synaptic problem has happened 3 minutes after a fresh install.
any other option apart from reinstall?  |

I'm sorry that you're experiencing so many problems with Parsix. Based on the shear number of posts you've made recently, it's clear to me that you're having a lot of problems that others simply are not experiencing. Here's what will be most helpful for myself and the rest of the community to help you get these problems sorted.
1. Please provide a brief yet full accounting of your hardware:
-Motherboard & processor
-Video graphics chip (i.e., ATI, Intel, nvidia or other)
-Sound card
-Network (wired or wireless; if wireless which chipset.)
2. Please describe how you've installed Parsix
-Which version of Parsix? (i.e., Parsix-1.5r1?)
-Are you utilizing entire hard disk?
-Did you setup seperate home partition?
-Are you dual booting with Windows?
-Is your system fully up-to-date using default repositories?
3. Please provide your /etc/apt/sources.lst
4. Please provide your /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Okay, now we're cooking!! While I digest your information (thank you) please have a look at this site which is specific in installing Debian Lenny (upon which Parsix is based) on your hardware. The information provided there should help sort some of the more obvious hardware and screen issues. Possibly some others as well...

lenny works fine on my screen...
it's only parsix (and sidux) that doesn't out of every other distro i've tried... |

Please don't feel insulted by my comments, they are only meant to try and help, as silly as they sound.
Do you have the same problems using the live disk as you do installed on your hard drive, and are you setting up as multi-user as these symptoms are reminiscent of me trying to setup Ubuntu as a single user account a long time ago with no root account. ie same root and user password this totally confused everything and things would grind to a halt.
Parsix prefers you to type su in the terminal (then press enter) then your root password to obtain root privileges as does must distros, not sudo like Ubuntu.

For all root operations I use Applications / Accessories / Root Terminal.
There is wiki howto for sudo, but I have never used it with Parsix. I use Root Terminal, because then I can use gedit etc as root, the following does not work with su:

For commands as normal user, I always use Applications / Accessories / Terminal.

| Guys, there's no harm in enabling sudo if it's what you prefer. As much as I don't approve of using sudo for everything, I have enabled this on my Parsix system and there have been no ill effects whatsoever. In fact, many nautilus scripts that others have made expect sudo to be configured (obviously Ubuntu was the inspiration for many of these scripts.) In any case, it doesn't matter how one executes root commands, albeit via sudo, su-, su or from a root terminal. The difference is merely a matter of personal choice. That's all. |

. The author of this thread is having some sort of configuration problem with Parsix. If I say use sudo then you say use Su, then people get very confused so it is always best to use the distro default commands when giving advice? Parsix is su then nobody gets confused. |

mandog - the live cd gives the same screen resolution problems as installed version. every other distro (apart from sidux) works perfect on my screen, including lenny.
my user and admin passwords are the same. not sure why this should mess up the system?
sudo is enabled on my system using visudo.
what drives me nuts, is that now... the next day... without me doing anything else, synaptic is working fine again!!! |

I personaly do not have a problem with sudo on a sudo system but on a su system I think the su command should be observed as much as possible. if you have problems. I think you have a permission problem somewhere along the line. The graphics are another problem Sidux, Parsix, are much closer with each other than Lenny, more cutting edge, |
