I installed Mplayer, but sometimes when I open videos, it will crash, and the whole system will hang, turning into black, then I have to push the power button.

Before I use Parsix, I use Dreamlinux, where Mplayer give me a lot of headaches there, it will crash whenever I used it. In parsix, mplayer behaves much better, nothing bad happen after I tested it for a few days until today, it finally crashed when I try to open a movie, the system hangs, and my old nightmare comes back!!

How many of you have encountered this mplayer crash? any one knows why it happens? and any solution?

Please give more info about your system as it helps so people can help you.
Do you use Compiz is Mplayer setup correctly ie is video set to x11 or gl. depending on your card, does the default player VLC, play ok,Do you use a laptop or desktop. If you had the same problem with Dreamlinux then maybe its relative as they are both Debian, But you could try Gnome Mplayer, (not gmplayer) Its a better interface for mplayer that plays things that mplayer does not. or Gxine again setup plays DVD well and most formats, But saying that VLC plays them all as does Totem xine. but not the Gsteamer version. I'm sorry I really can't help any more than this with info supplied.

Thank you very much for your reply. Here are more information:
I didn't use Conpiz,
Before it crash, I used mplayer both in xv and gl video output. VLC plays ok, but it doesn't play everything, it can't open RMVB file.
My video card is Intel 825 integrated card, integrated in my laptop.

Does mplayer have to be set to use x11 or gl? The default vo is xv and gl cost more cpu usage. The crash is pretty random, I tried many times, but couldn't find the exact reason for it.

Any thoughts? or how can I provide more information?
Thank you again.
I really appreciate it.

I don't think you need GL with intel drivers here is a link to read about screen going blank with Intel drivers, Did you try Gnome Mplayer it seems to be kinder than Mplayer and uses the the same engine certainly as it plays iso movies, also Totem xine does and will auto-play as a bonus.

Thank you, mandog. I see, it's the problem of intel driver.

I have not tried Gnome Player, I did a little search, it seems it's just a simple GUI for mplayer. Can you explain why it's more stable or nice than mplayer?

I think its very light on resources and just simple to set up that's all.

Thanks, mandog.

But using the mplayer without GUI is actually lighter and easier to use, I mean you can use keyboard to do everything you want.

Thanks anyway, I install Gnome Mplayer, and it's actually better than most of the mplayer GUIs.
