for some strange reason, parsix is refusing to mount my data partition now.

it fails at bootup, and then when i try from nautilus, it says i am not priviliged to mount the volume.

this was working fine last night.

any idea how to resolve this?

thanks

i just reinstalled parsix, and it started working fine again. somebody mentioned deleting references to devices in fstab, but there were none.

with parsix, i just reinstalled again. lenny seems to have this issue from the word go.

when i run as user, i can see device but no permission to mount.
when i run nautilus as root or sudo, i can't even see the other partitions.

is there a way to allow automounting/dismounting with full permissions, on debian/parsix?

Here's how I do mounting currently.

For USB devices, Parsix detects them when they are inserted, and from desktop I can right click and unmount it.

For other internal and external devices I use these fstab permissions:
http://lauri.ojansivu.googlepages.com/p ... 132Working

Note, that external USB drives are on my PC using /dev/sdb1. So if I want to use eSATA harddrive and USB flash drive at the same time, I need to do following:

1) In Root Terminal:
Code:
gedit /etc/fstab

2) Add following /dev/sdb1 textline (or uncomment # from the start if it's already there)
http://lauri.ojansivu.googlepages.com/p ... 132Working

3) Power on external harddrive

4) In Root Terminal
[code]cd /home/username/esata/
./starttaa.sh
mount -a[code]

Some error message may popup about permissions while doint that, click OK to ignore it.

5) Insert USB Flash drive.

6) After use, unmount drives from desktop, and power off or remove them.

7) Uncomment /dev/sdb1 for eSATA, so that USB Flash drives can be mounted while eSATA is not in use. This is because my eSATA has NTFS and USB Flash drives have FAT. Device can not be mounted with from selected filesystem.

Well I'm totally lost I just plug them in regardless I have no problem it does not matter about partitions formats etc. I use both ide + sata +flash altogether all my H/drives have a ntfs partition 2 internal sata, 2 ext/sata, 1 ext/ide, usb mouse usb printer, usb scanner, usb video dock 2 flash, all mounted read/write at the same time no problems at all, only internal sata drives in fstab. I run Windows, Parsix, Sidux, Parsix/sidux, (thats Parsix converted to Sid using sidux scripts gives all the advantages of Parsix/gnome and Alans work with Gnome and Parsix with sidux base and scripts this is not easy but really does work)
these all run on 1 sata/hd. all behave the same and. + Arch on the other internal drive Arch is not used much now as I like Parsix over all distros.

Sure, I only need those steps because I use binary drivers for PCMCIA eSATA card, and I haven't had time to figure out howto use it with open source drivers. Without that, everything is detected and mounted automatically, as you said. Smile

it seems that when i insert a usb-hdd, everything mounts fine and is writeable.

in respect of other partitions on my internal harddrive, lenny can mount it if included in fstab. when trying to mount via nautilus, it says error with write permissions.

regardless of mounted or not, all internal partitiions (other than root), are not writeable.

this is simply, because they all belong to user root. i've tried changing the mounted directory to 'chmod 777 /media/data', but the permissions don't seem to change.

i know i'm going to get a response where i will kick myself - but i suppose it goes with the territory of being a newb.

I think your partitions are either dity or not partitioned correctly or your fstab is not correct.
When you run parsix/ from the live cd were the icons for the partitions showing on the desktop, if they were they will be mounted read/write in fstab
when Parsix is installed no need to edit anything including ntfs, If the partitions are dirty they should not mount and if the do the are not accessible or if they do only in root.
Parsix/Sidux are much easier to set up than lenny ie they both set up read/write both from live cd and during install, what are you partitioning your drive to I personally only use Reiserfs or jfs. but they are all good, Always use a stand alone live cd p/magic live cd or g/parted. live but again its down to software and personal choice.
My feelings are you should wipe your hardrive clean thats 00000 it then start again from scratch. (I suggest this as sometimes their are partition viruses already on the hardrive from windows and they can effect your partition every time you use windows.) do your first partition, if for windows use ntfs not fat32. then make the rest a extended partition that will allow you to setup as many partitions as you want to. if you are new to Linux use do not forget swap, then ext 3 or reiserfs as they both perform disk check on a regular basis. If use require speed then use jfs as its very fast. remember use a stand alone partitioner not a distro live cd for partitioning ie p/magic they do a better job. g/parted included in distros often crashes rendering your partitions us. G/parted P/magic live can both perform partition chech repair.
I hope this does not paint a gloomy picture but I think you should then get a more stable system at the end of the day. and for the record I got similar problems when I started with Linux. I don't any more thank goodness. Remember always way up advice first as what may work for some may not work for others.

with parsix, i never have a problem with hd access - but as the screen resolution doesn't work for my laptop - i'm thinking of going back to debian lenny (which has perfect screen resolution).

the partitions are actually fine, as i can access them without problem from all distros - even from lenny when i log in as root.

the problem is that for some reason, lenny is mounting all internal partitions as root only - and doesn't let me change to all users with chmod 777.

just wondering if there is a fix for that.

ta.

lawmanuk:
If you have perfect screen resolution in debian lenny, you could try to copy it's xorg.conf to Parsix.

lawmanuk try this with Lenny
Run nautilus as root click to open partition right click on empty space
click on properties click on permissions on top entry change root to your user name change from read/only so you can read/write close down and reboot, see if the partition now reads/writes.
Parsix screen resolution what have you tried both programs the program in admin gives you the choice of cards and monitors this is the same program that Ubuntu uses Parsix ports it from Ubuntu. its best to play with live disk to find the right settings then boot up parsix and change the settings, you could also try the Sidux forum and the Ubuntu forum for anwsers. I found Lenny is very bland after Parsix.
